BACKSTORY

I always dreamed of traveling to Greece, determined to visit Delphi, the legendary Oracle site I had read about in the stories that mesmerized me as a young girl. I was drawn to connect to this sacred mythical place, nestled beneath the towering Mount Parnassus. Considered the “omphalos” or the center of the world, I would someday visit the Goddess temple of Athena and the temple of Apollo, known widely as Delphi’s divine guardian.

Upon finally traveling there, this long-awaited dream becoming a reality (I HIGHLY recommend!) I was awed by Apollo and Athena’s presence, but it was the energy of the Pythia—the ancient priestesses—that most deeply captivated me. This powerful feminine presence seemed to whisper from the past, even stronger than I anticipated. The Pythia, the priestesses of Delphi, derived their name from the serpent, symbolizing both wisdom and mystery. These wise women were regarded with immense reverence by political leaders, priests, and society, the people. As I stood at Delphi, it wasn’t the towering temple of Apollo that called to me, but the subtle, yet undeniable pull of the feminine energy emanating from the sacred spring below the temple. I could feel the ancient priestesses, not just as figures of the past, but as living forces that still have power to ignite in us, lessons to teach us, inspiration we need right now. It was their presence that moved me most profoundly, leading me to deepen my connection with their wisdom. And learning how their power was forcibly suppressed by the patriarchy, that inspires me to rise up now. The voice of feminine wisdom must not be forgotten, especially in this moment of time, as the tides of patriarchy swell even higher. May they inspire us to speak truth to power. May we remember the past to change the future. May it be for the benefit of all beings.
